The record and the route
The record was set in 2017 by Johnas Deichmann and is essentially a point to point record between the Western and Eastern most points of Eurasia, starting in Cabo de Roca, Portugal and finishing in Vladivostokin Russia on the edge of the Pacific ocean. There is no fixed route, and so the record is as much about planning, navigating through the various hurdles of attaining Visas and avoiding areas of political tension or even conflict. A degree of flexibility will be needed by Siofiane during the journey and the pedalling will be the easiest part!
"The first hurdle came a few weeks ago when I realized there was no way the chinese border guards would let me cycle to the first Chinese city. I had to go back to the drawing board and explore other options.
Surprisingly, the Afghanistan route appeared an easier option then the Pakistan one. With the help of local guides, riding there seemed safe enough. So I started gathering intel and looking at maps.
Then Israel started bombing Iran turning the country into a mess for both locals and foreigners (no internet, banking system down, systematic police checks). In a matter of days, this whole route became a clear no-go."
So with limited routing options available Sofiane sets off across Europe and through Turkey, before a turn north through Russia and into Kazakhstan. After crossing Kazakhstan, Sofiane will pass China en route to Mongloia, before a second visit into China and then finally a short stint through Russia to the finish in Vladivostok.
Sofiane will be taking on this challenge aboard a Bombtrack Hook Ti and will roll on a set of HUNT Limitless Gravel Wheels. You can follow Sofiane on his tracking page.
