Less gears, more feel.

Every now and then a bike comes together not because someone wanted to add more features — but because they wanted to strip things back.

Less complexity. Fewer decisions. More connection to the trail.

That’s exactly the spirit behind this build. A deliberately simple singlespeed trail bike that feels just as at home carving through singletrack as it does leaning against a café wall after the ride. It’s a reminder that great bikes don’t always come from adding things - sometimes they come from leaving them out.

Steel at the core

At the heart of the build sits the 2023 Pasta Party steel frame from Sour Bicycles.

Steel has a certain character that many modern bikes have quietly lost over the years. There’s a subtle give to it — a calm, composed feel on rough terrain — while still being tough enough for long days exploring trails.

Finished in a matte Rose Gold, the frame manages to stand out without shouting. Paired with understated black and silver decals, the result is a bike that draws attention for the right reasons. Not loud, not flashy — just beautifully balanced. One of those builds that naturally earns a second glance.

Fast wheels, instant response

Rolling stock comes courtesy of the Proven Carbon Race XC 29 wheelset.

The brief here was simple: keep things light, responsive and fast. With a 30 mm internal rim width, the carbon rims offer excellent support and stability while still delivering that crisp acceleration you immediately notice when you push on the pedals.

The hubs engage quickly with a sharp 5-degree pickup, meaning power transfers to the trail almost instantly.

And on a singlespeed bike, details like this matter more than ever. With only one gear, every pedal stroke counts — and the wheels translate that effort directly into forward momentum.

Performance contact points with real comfort

The contact points bring an interesting mix of race-bred performance and unexpected comfort.

The 612R Carbon saddle from SQlab is typically designed for aggressive riding positions, but its ERGOWAVE shape delivers surprising comfort even during longer rides.

Up front, the 311 FL-X Carbon 12° handlebar from SQlab quietly filters vibrations from the trail. On rooty sections or longer gravel connectors, that added compliance becomes noticeably welcome.

The beauty of one gear

The drivetrain might be the most defining part of the whole build.
Instead of a conventional setup, the bike runs an XT crankset from Shimano with a 32-tooth chainring paired to a 20-tooth singlespeed cog from Problem Solvers.

No shifting. No second-guessing gear choice. Just ride.

On flatter trails it rolls far more efficiently than you might expect. Climbs demand commitment, but that’s part of the charm. And on descents, the bike delivers a pure, uncomplicated kind of fun that reminds you bikes don’t need complexity to be exciting.

Control when the trail speeds up

When things get faster, the braking setup keeps everything under control.

A mix of MT4 and MT8 brakes from Magura paired with levers from Oak Components offers plenty of power with excellent modulation — strong when needed, but never nervous.

Up front, a 34 Rhythm fork from Fox provides 120 mm of travel. Enough suspension to handle technical terrain without making the bike feel sluggish or overbuilt.

And when the trail steepens, the Highline dropper post from Crankbrothers with 125 mm of travel quickly opens up room to move.

A bike that invites you to ride

In the end, this build sits somewhere outside the usual categories.
It isn’t strictly a race bike. It’s not really a touring hardtail. And it’s definitely not a showpiece meant to sit still.

Instead, it feels like a quiet reminder of what riding bikes is really about.
A good steel frame. Fast wheels. Thoughtful components. And just one gear.

Comfortable enough for longer rides, playful enough for trails — and more than good-looking enough to roll straight from the forest to a post-ride coffee.

Simple, direct, and exactly the kind of bike that makes you want to head out for “just one quick lap” after work.
