Mechanics at home: Setting up tubeless tires

Setting up tubeless tires can seem tricky, but once you’ve got the right steps, it’s a smooth process. Here’s a simple guide to help you get your HUNT wheels & tires ready for a smoother, more reliable ride.

1. Prepare Your Rims:

Make sure your rims are tubeless-compatible (all HUNT wheels are tubeless compatible). If they’re not already taped for tubeless, apply tubeless rim tape. The tape should cover the entire rim bed and overlap slightly on both sides to ensure a good seal.

Press the tape down firmly and ensure there are no air bubbles. Some rims come with pre-installed tape, so check before applying your own.

2. Install the Tubeless Valve:

Insert the tubeless valve into the rim hole. Tighten the nut on the outside of the rim to secure it in place. Make sure it’s snug but not over-tightened, as you want to avoid damaging the valve.

3. Mount the Tire:

Place one side of the tire bead onto the rim. Start at the valve and work your way around. Once one side is on, fit the second side of the tire onto the rim. You may need to use tire levers, but be careful not to damage the tire or rim.

Make sure both beads of the tire are sitting evenly in the rim.

4. Add Tire Sealant:

Remove the valve core using a valve tool (or a small tool that fits) to make adding sealant easier. Pour the recommended amount of sealant into the tire through the valve stem. Usually, 60-90ml of sealant is enough for most mountain or road tires.

Reinstall the valve core and tighten it.

5. Seat the Tire Bead:

To ensure the tire bead seats correctly, start inflating the tire with a floor pump or a compressor. You may hear a popping sound as the bead snaps into place. If the bead doesn’t seat properly, try adding a bit more air while working the tire with your hands.

If needed, use soapy water around the tire bead to help it slip into place more easily.

6. Inflate the Tire:

Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure, typically indicated on the sidewall of the tire. Make sure the tire is evenly seated around the rim, and there are no visible gaps.

If you're using a compressor, you may need to give the tire a quick burst of air to fully seat the bead.

7. Check for Leaks:

Spin the HUNT wheel and check for any sealant leaks. If you see any, shake the wheel gently or move it around to help the sealant fill in any small gaps.

If needed, add a little more sealant or air.
