How to plan your
perfect cycling getaway.

It’s that time of year again, when professional teams and social riders migrate to warmer climates in search of dry roads, longer days, and prime training conditions. But what makes these destinations so appealing, and how can you plan the perfect escape to maximise your time in the saddle?

1. Choose Your Location

When selecting your training camp destination, consider what kind of terrain you want; mountains, rolling roads, or a mix of both. Do you prefer solitude or the company of others? For my first cycling trip of 2025, I packed my bike box and booked a solo room. After considering several hotspots, I chose Calpe, Spain. With warm weather in February, being familiar with the routes and local food spots, it felt comforting to know exactly where I was going, especially while traveling alone.
2. Plan your training
Set clear goals for your camp - are you aiming to double your riding time, climb more vertical meters, or just catch some sun?
For me, Calpe was about improving training consistency while juggling a full-time job. The longer, lighter days offer a welcome break from UK winters and allow for longer rides during the week. It's also important to structure your days, overdoing it can be counterproductive, so be sure to schedule some easy café rides into your routine for balance.

3. Plan your routes

Every cycling destination has its iconic routes. In Calpe, it's places like Bernia, Col de Rates, and Val D’eBo. In Mallorca, Puig Major, Coll de Sóller, or Sa Calobra. If you're on a tight schedule, try to include a few of these famous climbs. If you're cycling solo, I recommend sharing your routes with a friend or family member, this can provide peace of mind, and even with years of experience, I still do this myself.
4. Fuelling
As you increase your hours on the bike, your appetite will grow. Feeling well fueled is key to tackling as many hours as you want on the bike. I like to mix up my on-bike nutrition with Veloforte chews and bars, as well as simple snacks like brioche rolls and Haribo - easy and effective.
Off the bike, fuelling is just as important. Find your nearest Mercadona and stock up on wholesome, satisfying options. If it helps, create a food plan to keep you on track, when fatigue sets in, it’s all too easy to reach for a snack instead of a proper meal.
